Salt Water Pool Systems

Every reason to convert your pool to Salt Water!

Comfort - Salt Water pools are much gentler on your eyes, nose, skin and hair than chlorine pools. Salt water pools are usually one-tenth the salinity of the ocean water, yet maintain the sanitary needs of your pool.

Cost – Although Salt Water Systems require an upfront conversion, the savings can pay for itself in just a few years because the cost of maintenance is usually half of that of a typical chlorine pool.

Chemicals - No more handling dangerous chlorine tablets or powder, just salt! That’s right, no more buying buckets or bags of chlorine, and having to wait days to swim after dispersing too much chlorine in the pool. This endlessly saves time, money and aggravation. Not to mention, you won’t have to deal with the odor of chlorine.

Maintenance – Less routine maintenance, a salt water pool typically cleans itself, because salt makes chlorine to sanitize the pool. Salt water pools stand a far better chance of killing algae all year long- even in the colder months.

How do Salt Water Systems work?

Salt Water Systems generate chlorine by the use of a chlorine generator. The Salt cell produces natural chlorine from the salt by separating the salt passed through the generator into two main components, sodium and chloride. Then, the chlorine made from the salt system will sanitize the pool water by oxidation. The water will be returned to the pool through the pump system as chlorinated water again. The salt system will measure the chlorine content of the water passed through it and generate morechlorine as needed. This process will continue to maintain the chlorine level in the pool. Most Salt Water Systems can be set to generate more or less chlorine, depending on the needs of the pool.

Traditional swimming pools require adding chlorine regularly to maintain the proper levels, because chlorine levels eventually fall from sanitizing the pool through oxidation and from being in direct sunlight.

How should I care for my Salt Water Pool?

You should only use high purity salt that is designed for salt water pools, cheaper generic salts often contain many contaminants that could pose water balance issues, scaling, staining or affect the water’s clarity.

Only use treatment products that are designed for salt water pools. Products designed for chlorine pools may contain sulfites and phosphorus-based components that can cause scale in your chlorine generator. These sulfites and phosphorus-based components break down into compounds like orthophosphates, which are nutrients for algae. Bottom Line – Scale can significantly shorten the life span of your chlorine generator!

Test your pool regularly and balance if needed. While the chlorine generator creates chlorine from the salt, it is still critical to maintain the proper pH, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid which extends the life of chlorine. Regular testing and balancing if necessary can increase the life of your salt system, by maintaining the salt system’s factory specified chemical levels in your swimming pool.
